Launched back in 2009 Google entered the URL shortener market hoping to bring competition to the likes of bit.ly. However, even after a grand launch they never really followed up the initial launch with many updates.
Even as it stands I think they still only offer the same analytics that they did at launch – although they have made it look prettier.
Well after 10 years Google have decided to close down their URL shortener.
They have said it is due to many other URL shorteners available – like ooo.ai and bit.ly – and the way people are using links have changed so therefore not a focus for them.
Is this just another example of Google tipping their toe into the water of a new product sector and then getting bored of it?
Their full official blog post is HERE.
If you use this tool you have until 30th March 2019 to find a replacement – I highly recommend ooo.ai our sister site as I know what is planned! đŸ™‚
